The National Library of New Zealand has been facing increasing and conspicuous digital storage cost pressure with the volume of digital collections growing rapidly over time. To alleviate this pressure, the Library initiated the Optimising Digital Storage project in 2016 to implement a new IT storage solution. As the Library embarked on this greenfield project, it utilised the opportunity to improve and strengthen its IT storage infrastructure (including geographic redundancy), thus creating a stronger foundation and pathway forwards. At the same time we are also clear that all technology change needs to be focused on its transformational impact and we see this change as being central to the Library’s digital transformation journey, and allowing us to better leverage our digital collections to engage with our customers, e.g. providing an environment that can support digital research for a range of communities. This presentation will introduce the project and the direction of travel we envisage opening up for us as a result.
